The 27th Letter of the Alphabet

(Photos from the aquarium, the view from our apartment at night, hanging out with Caroline and Kelly at the Fremantle prison, and getting harrassed by a street performer)

It's been a month since Dave and I have been in Australia and we're settling in nicely. The weather in Perth has been beautiful during our time off. We've seen most of the tourist sites in town, however we still have museums to go see on a rainy winter day.

We've been lucky that I have a few friends in town and we've kept a busy social life between "swings". A "swing" is a mine term for a rotation at work. It seems that Australians have an active pub life surrounding "footy" matches.

A few of us took a tour of the aquarium. Toothy looking sharks swim right over your head. There was also a "touch pool", where you can molest star fish, rays and sharks to your heart's content. Dave and I went there with our temporary roommate Caroline who's from Quebec. Caroline's boyfriend and I met up in Nunavut last year at a drill camp and have been friends ever since. Both of them have mining jobs a little bit further north. My friend Sarah from Laurentian University is also in town and flies out on a similar rotation to what Dave and I have so we get to see each other more often.

I'm starting to learn a new language. For example, "crook" means sick. The doctor told me I'd "get right crook" if I drank alcohol while on my medication. People who aren't married and live together are living "defacto". In other words, Dylan and Krystyn are defacto.
Also, the 27th letter of the alphabet is hay-ch. I understand the confusion (H) should technically be pronounced that way, but alas we've designated it as the 27th letter. While the 8th letter of the alphabet is pronounced (eigh-ch).

The mine site is pretty out there, as in outback central. Complete with 'roos, emus, camels, parrots, giant centipedes and dingos. Apparently, the snakes and lizards are in hibernation, where they can stay in they'd like. We don't do much at night besides go to the gym, the pub (cheapest beer in Australia) or the courts (basketball, squash etc.). We're starting to make more friends, only because people seem to understand our accents better

I'll write a seperate blog about our trip to Margaret River last break. It is like Niagara-on-the-lake, but we're still in debate about whether it's nicer or not. We got lots of photos of humpback whales and southern right whales as well as curious dolphins.
